How Is Solar Energy Used In Canada

Canada, making the best of renewable energy sources!

One of the most abundant forms of renewable energy available to us is solar energy, and Canada enjoys a place near the top of the world in the advancement and utilization of this technology.  With many areas of high meteorological pressure systems traveling across the country at any given time, Canada has a large number of sunny days ideal for the farming of the sun’s warm, nourishing rays.

In recent years, the Canadian government passed the Green Energy and Economy Act intended to escalate the design and implementation of renewable energy facilities throughout the country.  Solar energy was a natural choice to spearhead the initiative due to the cost-free fuel provided by the sun.

Often, the knee-jerk reaction by the public whenever a new act is enforced is one of suspicion; however, in the case of using agricultural farmland for the collection of solar energy, residents of Ontario are already on board.  The farmers are happy to have an option beyond the fickle market of crop pricing as a means to generate revenue.  In addition, the non-farming community of Ontario is just as happy for them.  Many Ontarians feel that solar energy collection is a quiet, no intrusive means of providing power to their homes and businesses.  Although the feedback received from the residents was generally positive, an indication of concern for an overabundance of solar farms was noted, though the number of solar farms for which they expressed concern were far below any that would hinder the progress of solar energy collection technology.

Recently, however, the Green Energy and Economy Act placed a limit on the types of agricultural land that may be used for solar farms in and around Ontario as well as across the nation.  These limits are greater in number and more restrictive than indicated in the original language of the act, causing concern in Canada’s alternative energy sector.  The hope is that talks can be initiated between the act officials, solar energy developers, and the farmers to reach an amicable agreement.

As with many of its renewable energy initiatives, Canada seeks international partnerships with many countries to help spread the proliferation of solar energy generation and consumption.  Founded in 1993, the Photovoltaic Power Systems Program is dedicated to working in cooperation with countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States to increase the number of facilities able to convert solar energy to electricity.
