Can anyone explain practical application of MEMS/nanotechnology

i have some interest in these technologies but don’t entirely understand all of their practical applications in other fields (most explanations/descriptions are convoluted and too complicated for me). Can anyone give me information or helpful websites for possible applications for solar energy, cancer research, and whatever applications these tech’s have? Also, how realistic would it be for them to make a substantial impact in society in the next 5 years? is the “future” upon us, or are scientists wishfully thinking?
